Glossary
Bindings - By which I mean the book-bindings: the covering on the front, back, and spine of a book which hold the pages together and protect them.
Bookplates - An article affixed to a book to which shows current or past ownership. Edition - Copies of a book printed at within particular time frame using mostly the same setup of type. Endpaper - The double leaves bound into the front and back of a book after printing. Engravings - Term often used to refer to illustrations produced via the intaglio technique. Font - A group of letters, symbols and numbers united by design. Refers to these as seen as physical pieces of type. |
Fore-edge - The part of the book opposite the spine.
Forme - A group of type secured together into a frame for printing. Leaf - Often referred to as a 'page', but properly meaning both sides thereof. Tympan - On a hand press, the rectangular frame, hinged onto the press, which when closed holds the paper in place and slides it under the press. Typeface - A group of letters, symbols and numbers united by design. Refers to these as seen printed on a page. Wooden Press - By which I mean most printing press machines used for printing letters or woodcuts during the first 350 years of printing from c1450-1800. |
